My Treatment Philosophy

I know how difficult it can be to reach out for help, especially when you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious or alone.  That is why I employ the therapies that bring you relief in the shortest amount of time possible.

I believe therapy should empower you & result in a more engaging sense of self.  Hopefully bringing you healthier relationships and making you happier and healthier.  EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing) process's past negative experiences so you can be in control of your emotions and behaviors, providing you a much more present and happier life. I also employ elements of cognitive behavioral therapy, solution focused therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy & motivational interviewing during therapeutic sessions.

EMDR (EYE Movement Desensitization & Reprocessing)

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) has successfully helped many people change negative emotions and behaviors. This therapeutic approach has been around for the last 27 years and it continues to quicken the length and time of symptom remission.

Research has shown the average length of time for symptom remission connected with (single episode) or (uncomplicated) Post Traumatic Stress Disorder varies dramatically between EMDR & Trauma Focused CBT Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (talk therapy).                                                                                                           EMDR

In most cases full remission of symptoms occur after 1-3 sessions with out homework.

VS

Trauma Focused (CBT)

Remission of symptoms generally occurred after 8-12 sessions and homework is expected.

HOW & WHY

I will try and condense the how and why in a very shortened synopsis, in time I will provide longer articles on this and other subjects under my "Articles" Page.

Because of Francine Shapiro's discovery of Eye Movement Desensitization (EMD) in 1989 and then through evidenced backed research  Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing,  EMDR was born in 1992.

When EMD first arrived Francine Shapiro believed that the reduction of anxiety/distress was a result of the behavioral response coming from eye movements moving back and forth.

In 1992 when EMD was changed to EMDR Francine Shapiro realized the bilateral movements brought about a reprocessing of the subject matter/memory that was causing the distress, yes the distress was decreased but it was a result of the memory being viewed in a different way with in the individual & not specifically because of the eye'movements creating a behavioral response.

In 2016 a lot has been learned,  we now know the brain needs bilateral stimulation to quicken its own internal processing abilities,  this can be in the form of eye movements, tones beeping from ear to ear or tactile stimulation taps back and forth on individuals knees or through the use of hand buzzers.

We all actually engage in bilateral stimulation on a day to day basis,  think about it every time we walk somewhere, sleep at night, even while I am typing at this moment both of my hands are working creating bilateral stimulation with in my brain.

If I am engaged in bilateral stimulation everyday, Why cant my brain just process this stuff on its own?

We know that profound life events be negative or positive have a strong impact on us emotionally & psychologically.  When we suffer a negative life event our fight or flight response, becomes engaged & often gets stuck with that "switch in the ON position" in our brain.  Although our brain wants to process that information, it is unable to and our brain now believes we our still in danger.

That is where a therapist who is trained in EMDR comes in,  just like a surgeon who knows what too cut out of the body,  so the body can heal its self .   A competent clinician will know what you should focus on during sessions so your mind can & will continue to heal.   A natural benefit that will flow from your EMDR sessions, is why you have emotions, how to process through strong emotions and provide more control over your life leaving you healthier and happier.
