Negative Feelings

We all have felt feelings of hopelessness, sadness, being depressed, or alone. Those are human emotions and as humans we occasionally feel these negative feelings, but the problem comes when these negative feelings are interfering with our lives on a daily basis. If you are skipping social activities or feeling out of control, this video is for you. Firstly, I can speak from my own experience. I know negative emotions and sensations cause us as humans to stop enjoying life. I have felt the same way until I found some unusual grounding techniques that  I am about to share with you. I am going to show you a couple of quick techniques that have brought myself and my clients and immediate relief in a moment of crisis.

Grounding Techniques

The first technique will help you with nightmares and other sleep-related issues. I call this the Sheets Method. The second technique is useful anytime or any place you find yourself in a moment of panic crisis or distress. I call this technique, Ice Water. Let's explore each of these:

SLEEP-RELATED ISSUES - THE SHEETS METHOD

If you wake up in the middle of the night feeling distress, the Sheets Method will help your mind become grounded in the reality that you are safe and ok. It's very simple, and the way that you do this is by rubbing the bed sheets together between your fingers. Seems very simple, and it is very simple, but what it does is it creates a sensation that re-orients your mind into the presence of being in your bed and being safe and okay.

Distress - The Ice Water Method

If you find yourself in a moment of distress at some point in the day, the Ice Water Method follows the same principle and also grounds your mind in the reality that you are safe and ok. How you do this is by getting a glass of ice water, or water, or any sort of liquid and while drinking it you pay specific attention to the sensations in your mouth, and then as it flows down the back of your throat.

With both techniques, what you will feel or should feel, is the edge of the intense sensations or feelings, break away as your brain recognizes that you are safe and you are ok.

Why these methods work

You might be thinking these technique seem too simple, but here is why they work, scientifically. When you are feeling distressed your brain believes you're in danger and when you focus on these specific sensations, that we talked about, as you do these techniques your mind becomes grounded in the present (pulling your mind out of the fight-or-flight response).

The key to moving through distressful situations

The key to moving through distressful situations is realizing right now, I mean right now, as you're watching this video, whatever negative experience or experiences you've been through (or may have to go to through) is not happening at this moment, so you're fine, you're OK.
